Day 1 Durban

Welcome to South Africa! Your exciting journey kicks off with a welcome meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. If you arrive early, take the opportunity to discover Durban’s vibrant offerings. With its beautiful sandy beaches and lively nightlife, Durban is an inviting destination. Don’t miss the iconic Golden Mile, a scenic shoreline bordered by the rolling surf on one side and a bustling beachfront featuring skate parks, restaurants, and cafes on the other. For dinner, consider trying a traditional Bunny Chow or savouring some fresh seafood along Florida Road. Your group leader will gladly recommend their favourite dining spots.

Day 2  Drakensberg

Today, we depart Durban and venture inland towards the stunning Drakensberg mountain range, a journey lasting approximately 7–8 hours. Along the way, we make a meaningful stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, where you can learn about the history and legacy of this remarkable figure. Our path then continues towards the impressive Drakensberg mountain range.

Your accommodation for this leg of the journey is in comfortable twin rooms with ensuite facilities, located at a distinctive backpacker lodge in Drakensberg. Upon settling in, you can relax and socialize with your fellow travellers in the thatched-loft lounge room, which offers amenities like book-swapping and internet access. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy the lodge’s onsite pool, jacuzzi, barbecue area, fire pit, and Wi-Fi services.

Day 3  Drakensberg

Embark on a delightful hike through a diverse and captivating array of flora and fauna in the majestic Drakensberg region.

This range, reaching an impressive 3482 meters, is the highest in Southern Africa and serves as a natural border between South Africa and Lesotho. Locally known as the Barrier of Spears or the Dragon Mountains, the Drakensberg offers breathtaking vistas and fantastic photo opportunities.

As you explore the trails, you’ll be treated to stunning views and have the chance to connect with the natural beauty of this unique landscape.

Day 4  Lesotho Highlands

Say goodbye to the enchanting Drakensberg as you journey into the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho, a trip of approximately 8-9 hours. Often referred to as the ‘Kingdom in the Sky,’

Lesotho is like a hidden gem nestled within South Africa. Its stunning mountain ranges and extensive hiking trails make it a nature lover’s paradise. The border crossing into Lesotho is generally smooth, although occasional delays may occur depending on the season. Along the way, you’ll pass by the captivating Golden Gate Highlands National Park, renowned for its extraordinary sandstone rock formations. Keep your eyes peeled for the park’s diverse wildlife, including elands, zebras, mongooses, and a myriad of bird species.

Day 5  Lesotho Highlands

Day 6  Wild Coast / Cintsa

During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with these welcoming and hospitable people, gaining valuable insights into their enduring cultural heritage. Upon your late afternoon arrival, you’ll have time to unwind and refresh before considering the option of joining a group dinner.

Day 7  Wild Coast / Cintsa

You might consider embarking on a hike or mountain biking adventure in the scenic hinterland, renting a canoe to explore the Cintsa River, or even signing up for a surfing lesson to catch some waves.

Day 8  Addo Elephant National Park

Continue your journey to Addo Elephant National Park, with a travel time of approximately 7–8 hours. Established in 1931 to safeguard the area’s dwindling elephant population, Addo Elephant National Park stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts. With more than 450 elephants now thriving within the park, along with Cape buffalo, black rhinos, various antelope species, and even the exceptional flightless dung beetle, it has become a haven for diverse wildlife.

Upon your arrival, partake in an afternoon group game drive, where you’ll have the chance to spot these and other fascinating creatures from the comfort of your vehicle.

Day 9  Garden Route / Tsitsikamma National Park

Start your day with an early rise for another thrilling game drive within Addo Elephant National Park, this time aboard an overland vehicle. Following this exciting wildlife encounter, set out on your journey along the famed Garden Route, with the first destination being Tsitsikamma National Park.

The drive will take approximately 4–5 hours. Tsitsikamma National Park is a captivating blend of towering ancient forests and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. This protected area offers a unique opportunity to explore both terrestrial and marine environments.

Upon arrival, your group leader will guide you to a local activity centre, where you’ll find a range of options to choose from for your free day ahead. Some of these activities might pique your interest, and you can consider booking them in preparation for tomorrow’s adventure.

Day 10  Tsitsikamma National Park

Utilize this additional day in Tsitsikamma National Park to further immerse yourself in its natural splendour. The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including Cape clawless otters, dolphins, tortoises, and, depending on the season, southern right whales. Baboons, monkeys, and a plethora of bird species also inhabit the area.

Take advantage of the various hiking trails available, some of which lead to breathtaking viewpoints, the Stormsriver Mouth, and enchanting waterfalls. Spend your day exploring and observing the park’s unique flora and fauna, and see how many of these remarkable creatures you can spot along the way.

Day 11  Garden Route / Oudtshoorn

Embark on a journey through the arid landscapes of the Karoo, making your way to Oudtshoorn. Along the route, take a break in Knysna to explore this charming town nestled beside a picturesque lagoon. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at the fascinating Cango Caves.

Spend some time discovering the unique rock formations within the caves, including the impressive ‘Cleopatra’s Needle,’ a rock formation that stands 29 feet tall and is believed to be over 150,000 years old. Your knowledgeable local guide will provide insights into the formation and history of these captivating caves.

Afterwards, your journey continues to Oudtshoorn, renowned as the world’s ostrich capital, due to its historical significance in the ostrich feather industry during the early 20th century.

Day 12  Bontebok National Park

Wake up bright and early for an extraordinary encounter with wild meerkats, which are part of the renowned “Shy 5” animal group. Head to their burrow and enjoy a unique experience as you observe these adorable creatures emerging into the sunlight. Sip on your coffee as you witness the meerkats’ morning routine of foraging and playing, all while maintaining a respectful distance to ensure they remain wild and undisturbed.

After your memorable meerkat encounter, continue your journey to Bontebok National Park, which is the smallest among South Africa’s national parks and is named after the distinctive antelope species that inhabit the area. As you drive to Swellendam, enjoy the breathtaking scenery of towering mountain passes and rugged landscapes. Upon reaching Swellendam, take part in a leader-led orientation walk to become familiar with the town’s rich history and cultural heritage. After the walk, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch in this charming town.

Later in the day, drive a short distance to Bontebok National Park and set up camp. With the rest of the afternoon at your disposal, consider embarking on one of the three nature-hiking trails available in the park. These trails offer a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings and spot local wildlife. Trail maps are conveniently provided at the campsite to help guide your exploration.

Day 13  Cape Agulhas / R320 Winery Route / Hermanus

Start your day bright and early with a journey to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. As you travel, you’ll be treated to the stunning landscapes that make this region so captivating. Along the way, you’ll follow the famous R320 winery route, providing you with the opportunity to visit two or three wineries. This region’s wine production is influenced by the cooling effects of the Atlantic Ocean, creating ideal conditions for growing grapes that produce exceptional wines.

Upon reaching Hermanus, a charming beachside town, you’ll have the chance to explore this picturesque area and take in its coastal beauty. The region’s climate, shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, is particularly conducive to grape cultivation. The local wineries cultivate a variety of grape types, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage, creating a diverse range of wine flavours for you to sample and enjoy.

Day 14 Cape Town

Take some time to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Hermanus. You might consider embarking on a leisurely walk from Grotto Beach, following the scenic cliff and beach path. Alternatively, explore the local shopping strip, where you can discover unique souvenirs and enjoy the charming atmosphere.

Later on, embark on your journey back to Cape Town via the picturesque bay route, which will take you through stunning landscapes and along the coastline. As you return to Cape Town, you’ll be welcomed by its captivating mix of breathtaking coastline, towering mountains, and vibrant cityscape. Cape Town is a city that offers a wide range of experiences, from exploring its vineyards and engaging in adventure activities to savouring the diverse culinary scene.

Upon your return to Cape Town, you’ll be dropped off at a centrally located hotel at around 3 p.m., assuming there are no unforeseen delays. With no scheduled activities after your arrival in Cape Town, you have the flexibility to depart at a time that suits you. This marks the conclusion of your adventure, leaving you with lasting memories of your journey through South Africa’s captivating landscapes and cultures.
