Day 1  Johannesburg

Welcome to Johannesburg, the city of Gold.

Sawubona – welcome to South Africa! Your adventure starts with a 6 p.m. welcome meeting. If you arrive early, explore Johannesburg’s vibrant cultural spots like Newtown, Braamfontein, or Maboneng. Alternatively, visit the Apartheid Museum for a thought-provoking experience. After the meeting, consider joining an optional group dinner to bond with your travel companions and receive local bar and restaurant recommendations from your leader. Get ready for an unforgettable journey ahead!

Day 2  Khama Rhino Sanctuary

After bidding farewell to South Africa, you’ll cross the border into Botswana and make your way to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, a journey of approximately 8-10 hours. Located on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert, this sanctuary has transformed from a hunting area to a conservation project. Its mission is to safeguard Botswana’s last remaining populations of black and white rhinos, as well as other fascinating wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, leopards, ostriches, and wildebeest. Observing these creatures at the various waterholes is a memorable experience. Your visit to this sanctuary directly contributes to protecting the endangered white rhinoceros and supports local communities.

Later, embark on a dusk game drive to witness the rhinos in their most active state. This excursion promises an enriching adventure and a chance to engage in wildlife conservation efforts.

Day 3  Maun

After leaving the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, you’ll board your vehicle and travel to Maun, a journey of approximately 8-9 hours. In Maun, you’ll have a chance to stock up on any necessary supplies for your upcoming adventure. This vibrant town serves as the gateway to one of the world’s most extraordinary ecosystems – the Okavango Delta. Covering an area of 16,000 square kilometres, this region is a labyrinth of lush wetlands and waterways teeming with wildlife.

Keep an eye out for hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and majestic big cats during your exploration. However, it’s not just the diverse wildlife that captivates visitors; the stunning waterscapes and mesmerizing horizons will leave you spellbound for days on end. Prepare for an awe-inspiring journey through the magical wonders of the Okavango Delta.

Day 4 Okavango Delta

Today, prepare for an immersive adventure as you hop aboard a traditional mokoro, a dugout canoe guided by skilled local ‘polers.’ Embark on an exciting Okavango waterways experience, where you may be fortunate enough to encounter some of the delta’s unique wildlife and exotic birdlife.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore the intricate network of lagoons, lakes, and streams on foot, guided by experienced local guides. As the day comes to a close, you’ll camp on a remote island nestled in the heart of the untamed wilderness, lulled to sleep by the enchanting sounds of Africa’s vibrant heartlands.

This unforgettable experience will bring you closer to the natural wonders of the Okavango Delta and its captivating wildlife.

Day 5  Okavango Delta

Start your day with an early morning sunrise walk, keeping your eyes peeled for majestic elephants and the potentially formidable Cape buffalo! The buffalo’s impressive-looking horns, known as a ‘boss’, serve as a formidable bone shield. After the walk, return to camp for a hearty breakfast, and the rest of the day is yours to unwind and indulge in relaxation. Take a refreshing swim or perhaps a well-deserved nap during the warmer hours.

If you crave more river serenity, consider another mokoro trip to immerse yourself in the tranquil waterways. Enjoy the serenity of the African wilderness at its finest!

Day 6 Maun

After packing up your camp, embark on a mokoro journey back to the ‘poler’ station, and from there, continue to Maun by vehicle (approximately 2-3 hours). In Maun, we’ll visit a local brewery known for producing beer made from millet cultivated by small-scale farmers. This unique initiative not only supports the farmers’ coexistence with elephants but also promotes an inclusive economy. By connecting sustainable farming practices to the region’s wildlife economy, this project enhances the benefits for the local community. Later, settle into your campsite on the outskirts of town for the night. Enjoy the tranquil surroundings and prepare for more exciting adventures to come.

Day 7  Nata

Get up early and hit the road for Nata (approximately 6–7 hours). This small town is situated near the stunning Makgadikgadi Salt Pans which are some of the largest on earth, covering around 12,000 square kilometres. This afternoon, take the opportunity to explore the salt pans in an open vehicle. They are naturally dry and salty for a large part of the year, and during this time, the arid landscape has an eerie feel to it as the shimmering mirages disorientate the senses. At other times they take on a layer of grass and, as soon as the rains hit, become a refuge for migratory birds and animals.

Tonight’s campsite is a special one, located on the edge of the magnificent salt pans. Here, you’ll find a range of amenities to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. There’s a restaurant where you can savour delicious meals, a refreshing swimming pool to cool off in the African heat, and a cosy bar/lounge area to unwind and socialize with fellow travellers. Additionally, for your convenience, there’s an ATM available on-site if needed. Depending on availability, room upgrades are possible, so you can consider enhancing your accommodation experience for a more luxurious stay.

 

Day 8  Chobe National Park

As you leave the salt pans behind, your journey continues to the renowned Chobe National Park, known for its abundant wildlife, particularly its impressive population of elephants. In this extraordinary park, you’ll have the opportunity to witness elephants swimming in the Chobe River, accompanied by a diverse array of other wildlife, including hippos, a variety of birds, and sunbathing crocodiles along the riverbanks. Keep an eye out for cheetahs and lions that might come down to drink from the river as well.

This afternoon, you’ll enjoy a delightful sunset cruise on the Chobe River, a perfect way to end the day, soaking in the remarkable African scenery and toasting to more adventures on your journey.

Day 9  Victoria Falls

For an unforgettable start to the day, consider joining an optional morning game drive in Chobe National Park, offering a different perspective on the wildlife and landscape. After the game drive, continue your journey to Victoria Falls, which will take approximately 2-3 hours, including crossing the border into Zimbabwe.

Arriving just in time for lunch on the Zambezi River banks, you’ll have free time to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring sights and sounds of the mighty falls. Victoria Falls, with its thundering curtain of water stretching 1.7 kilometres wide and plummeting 108 meters into a narrow gorge, is a sight to behold.

During the wet season, the falls create a massive spray that can rise up to 400 meters, turning it into a powerful torrent. In the dry season, the view is unobstructed, allowing you to see the little islets in the river below.

Your Okavango Experience concludes after breakfast, and there are no additional scheduled activities. If you decide to extend your stay in Victoria Falls and seek some adventure, you have several exciting options available. Consider trying thrilling activities like whitewater rafting, canoeing, or flying fox rides. For a breathtaking scenic helicopter flight, we recommend Zambezi Helicopter Company (CAA Zimbabwe). Your tour leader will be happy to assist you in arranging this unforgettable experience.
