Day 1  Johannesburg

Sawubona! Welcome to Johannesburg, the vibrant South African capital. Joburg, as it’s fondly called, boasts a unique blend of opulent mansions and humble tin abodes, while green parks surround the city outskirts, balancing the urban jungle at its heart. Your adventure commences with a warm welcome meeting at 6 pm.

If you’re eager to start exploring and arrive ahead of time, why not venture to the Apartheid Museum? Delve into this crucial history before reuniting with your group, setting the stage for a meaningful journey that embraces both the past and the present of this dynamic city. Get ready for an exciting adventure, where every corner reveals a tapestry of stories and experiences awaiting you in Johannesburg.

Day 2  Kruger National Park

Get ready for an exhilarating day as you rise and shine for a long drive to Kruger National Park. Leaving Johannesburg, you’ll journey through the Mpumalanga Province, traversing the famous Panorama Route, where you’ll be treated to some of South Africa’s most breathtaking scenery, including the awe-inspiring Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

Kruger National Park, one of Southern Africa’s largest and most renowned National Parks, awaits with its abundant wildlife treasures. Home to over 500 bird species, 100 reptile species, and 150 mammal species – including the iconic Big Five and the endangered African wild dog – this natural haven promises a thrilling wildlife experience.

Venture through Kruger’s prime game viewing areas on your way to the camp, keeping a keen eye out for incredible creatures along the journey. As the day draws to a close, set up camp, allowing you to immerse yourself in the wild wonders of Kruger and prepare for an evening filled with adventure and anticipation.

The campground is situated within the Kruger Park itself and has shared facilities with hot and cold water and possible upgrades for accommodation depending on availability.

On occasion, during the peak months especially there might not be available campsites within the park itself for accommodation. In such circumstances, we will camp outside the park.

 

Day 3  Kruger National Park

Embrace the early morning light and start your day with a delightful breakfast of coffee and rusk (twice-baked bread). Your exciting morning game drive awaits, offering an exceptional opportunity to spot wildlife from the comfort of your overland vehicle. Along the way, indulge in birdwatching and take leisurely breaks at various waterholes and viewpoints, immersing yourself in the captivating surroundings of Kruger National Park.

As the sun sets, you have the option to unwind at camp or embark on an exciting adventure with an optional night drive led by a knowledgeable park guide. This thrilling experience allows you to witness the activities of nocturnal animals, from lions and hyenas on the prowl to impalas seeking their late-night meals. Prepare to be enthralled by the wonders of the wilderness under the enchanting African night sky.

Day 4  Eswatini (Swaziland / Hlane Royal National Park)

Embark on a leisurely morning game drive in Kruger National Park, covering a distance of 20 to 70 kilometres, depending on the captivating animals you encounter along the way. By mid-morning, bid farewell to Kruger and begin your journey towards Hlane Royal National Park. As you travel southeast, you’ll cross the border into the charming kingdom of Eswatini, nestled between Mozambique, Northern Zululand, and Mpumalanga.

Upon arrival at Hlane Royal National Park, a vast bushveld expanse adorned with ancient hardwood trees, your exploration commences immediately with a guided game walk. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, this walking safari provides a deeper understanding of the park’s large and intricate ecosystem. Accompanied by a professional ranger, you’ll have the opportunity to spot magnificent creatures such as rhinos, giraffes, and elephants while also observing the wonders of the smaller inhabitants like snakes, spiders, and small mammals (rest assured, there are no lions in the section of the park where you’ll be walking).

Day 5  Hlane Royal National Park

Today presents an excellent opportunity to delve further into the wonders of Hlane Royal National Park at your own pace. Consider opting for a thrilling 4×4 game drive within the park, led by a knowledgeable local Swazi guide. During this 2-2.5 hour adventure, expect to encounter a diverse array of animals, including antelopes, elephants, zebras, rhinos, and even the majestic lions. Whether you choose to embark on this safari in the early morning or late afternoon, the experience promises to be truly unforgettable.

Another enticing option for the day is a visit to the Hlane Umphakatsi (Chief Village) – an enriching tour of an authentic living homestead, offering a fascinating glimpse into Swazi culture and way of life. Delve deeper into the traditional customs, interact with the friendly locals, and partake in day-to-day activities. A special highlight of Umphakatsi is the presence of a female Chief, Inkhosikati, making this village truly unique among the few with such a distinction. Day 6  St Lucia Estuary

Today, we bid farewell to Hlane and journey towards Lake St Lucia, a captivating part of the St Lucia Estuary. En route, we’ll make a stop at a shop to gather any necessary supplies. Notably declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, the St Lucia Estuary teems with an incredible array of bird species, mammals, and reptiles, including numerous hippos and crocodiles. Upon arrival, get ready for an exciting Hippo Boat Safari, a unique and immersive experience offering a fresh perspective on wildlife viewing. Cruise along the estuary’s tranquil waters, observing creatures in their natural habitat, whether gracefully gliding through the waters or lounging on the banks. This encounter promises to be a delightful addition to our unforgettable journey.

Day 7  St Lucia Estuary

Today, we venture on a day trip to Cape Vidal, a true beach paradise nestled within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, along the stunning Zululand coast. Here, the marine life flourishes, offering a rich and diverse ecosystem. Keep an eye out for humpback whales during their seasonal migrations and the nesting of loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles on the beaches north of Cape Vidal from November to February. The day is yours to relish the sandy shores and bask in the warm sun, or if you desire, your leader can help you arrange optional activities in this captivating area. Later in the afternoon, we return to our camp at Lake St Lucia, bringing back the memories of our delightful beach escapade.

Day 8  Valley of a Thousand Hills

Durban offers sandy beaches, an exciting nightlife, and a myriad of experiences to savor. Feel free to extend your stay and indulge in leisurely pursuits. The Hotel is conveniently situated right next to the Rosebank Mall with numerous shops and restaurants although the Hotel itself also has a gym, restaurant, and bar area. This is a perfect base for exploring Johannesburg if you have any time before your tour starts.
