Day 1: Victoria Falls

Hello and welcome to Zimbabwe, home to the magnificent Victoria Falls!

Your tour commences today with a warm Welcome Meeting at 6 pm. Before this gathering, you have the flexibility to arrive at any convenient time. If you have some spare time, we suggest exploring the array of optional activities available in the area, making the most of your stay.

The majestic Victoria Falls are best observed from the Zimbabwe side, although witnessing them from both sides truly reveals their splendor.

For an unforgettable experience, we highly recommend booking a thrilling helicopter ride, granting you a bird’s-eye view of the falls and a chance to marvel at this natural wonder from above. The sheer beauty and grandeur of Victoria Falls from this vantage point will surely leave you in awe.

Day 2 Hwange National Park

After some time to explore in the morning, your journey will take you away from Victoria Falls to Hwange National Park through the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, a project proudly supported by The Intrepid Foundation. Here, you’ll have a unique opportunity to gain insights into wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts, the delicate human-wildlife conflict dynamics, and the Trust’s crucial role in anti-poaching initiatives. With a bit of luck, you might even meet some of the rescued or orphaned wildlife currently under their compassionate care.

Hwange National Park, steeped in historical significance as the royal hunting grounds of the Ndebele warrior-king Mzilikazi in the early 19th century, was officially designated as a national park in 1929. Today, it stands as a testament to Zimbabwe’s rich biodiversity, boasting an impressive array of wildlife, including over 100 mammal species and nearly 400 bird species. The park is renowned worldwide for its majestic elephants, and you’ll be amazed by the sheer number of these magnificent creatures – one of the largest elephant populations in Africa.

In the afternoon, set out to explore the wonders of Hwange National Park in an open 4WD vehicle, guided by knowledgeable local experts. Keep your eyes peeled for exciting wildlife encounters and listen attentively as your guides reveal captivating stories about this area and the remarkable animals that call it their home. Day 3 Matobo National Park

Leave Hwange behind, blazing a trail to Matobo National Park this morning. Shortly after departing Hwange, pause at the Painted Dog Conservation Centre, where the pressing issues of habitat loss and poaching are threatening the existence of the painted dog, also known as the African wild dog. Gain insights into the commendable efforts aimed at protecting and expanding the range and population of these magnificent creatures in Zimbabwe and the broader Hwange ecosystem.

Next, continue to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city. Meander through its streets adorned with historic colonial buildings, and indulge in a delightful lunch at a local cafe or restaurant. Afterwards, proceed to your camp, where you’ll be spending the next two nights.

Matobo National Park awaits, a sanctuary for a thriving population of black and white rhinoceroses, which can be tracked on foot. Additionally, the park is historically significant, housing the resting place of Cecil John Rhodes, the visionary behind Rhodesia and the renowned De Beers diamond company. Revered by the local people, the Matobo area carries profound spiritual and cultural importance, with numerous sites within the park serving as settings for significant ceremonies that continue to this day.

Day 4 Matobo National Park

Matobo National Park boasts a rich tapestry of birdlife and wildlife, serving as a sanctuary for both Black and White rhinoceroses. This morning, you’ll have a rare opportunity to track white rhinos on foot, guided by an expert local guide. As you venture forth, keep an eye out for other fascinating game species, such as klipspringers, leopards, warthogs, and springhares, all of which find their home in this diverse park.

Amidst this natural wonderland, you’ll also encounter a fascinating array of local plants and trees, including the wild pear and paperbark, each with unique stories to tell. Discover ancient San paintings adorning the rocks and be captivated by the intriguing formations that shape the landscape.

Following a delightful cold lunch, embark on a journey to a neighbouring village, where you’ll have the privilege of meeting some of the local people. Gain a deeper insight into the lives of these communities, discovering their history and traditions in the hills. Meet the charismatic and wise elderly chief Pondo, a local personality in his own right, and engage with other community members, enriching your understanding of the local way of life.

Day 5 Tshipise

As we bid farewell to the wonders of Matobo National Park and Zimbabwe, we embark on a journey to cross a bustling border post—the sole direct crossing between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Anticipate arriving at our camping site, nestled on the outskirts of Honnet Nature Reserve, during the late afternoon. Here, you can unwind and revel in the abundance of amenities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a delightful putt-putt course, and a captivating nature trail. For those seeking more adventure, optional Game Drives await, promising an extraordinary wildlife encounter in this enchanting reserve.

Day 6 Makushu Village

Upon reaching Makushu, a warm welcome awaits as you are greeted by a local village guide, ensuring your well-being throughout your stay. Prepare for a distinctive and unforgettable experience as you immerse yourself in the village life, staying with warm and welcoming homestay host mothers in their family homes. During your homestay, you’ll have a comfortable room with a double bed, and hosts may offer two or three guestrooms. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a homestay kit with clean linen, toiletries, and amenities like tea and coffee. True South African long-drop toilets are available outside each home, well-maintained and clean. Hot water is provided via portable bucket baths every morning and evening. This authentic experience allows you to immerse yourself in local customs and hospitality, offering a genuine taste of South African life.

 

Day 7 Kruger National Park

After a delightful breakfast, you’ll set off on an awe-inspiring journey to Kruger National Park, a true gem among Southern Africa’s vast game reserves. Along the way, there will be a convenient stop at a shop or market, ensuring you and your group have all the necessary camping supplies. Kruger National Park’s abundant wildlife awaits, boasting a staggering array of over 500 bird species, 100 reptile species, and 150 mammal species, including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog.

As you venture into the heart of the park, your wildlife encounter begins in earnest, with prime game viewing areas providing glimpses of remarkable creatures such as antelopes, elands, cheetahs, and rhinos. Please note that during peak periods, particularly in May – September & December, securing campsites within Kruger National Park may be challenging. In such cases, we’ll arrange camping just outside the park, ensuring you still have a memorable and fulfilling experience. Rest assured, no matter where we camp, your adventure will be filled with the wonders of the African wilderness.

 

Day 8 Kruger National Park

Rise early to savor a light breakfast of coffee and rusks before embarking on an exhilarating full-day game drive in our sturdy truck. A majority of the day will be dedicated to game viewing, bird watching, and taking in the breathtaking vistas at various waterholes and viewpoints. Depending on the season, you might be fortunate enough to spot the striking saddle-billed stork with its red beak or the charming blue waxbill foraging for seeds in the scrub. As the afternoon sun warms the landscape, seize the opportunity to unwind and relax.

Later, set out on a captivating night drive led by skilled local park guides to seek out nocturnal creatures, including the elusive predators of the night. Night drives offer an exceptional chance to observe Kruger National Park’s enigmatic nocturnal animals in their natural habitat. During this 2 to 3-hour journey, you may encounter a captivating array of creatures, from nightjars and servals to African wild cats, springhares, and owls. Prepare for an enthralling adventure as you witness the secret lives of these nighttime inhabitants, immersing yourself in the magic of the wild after dark.

In the event that your group stays outside Kruger National Park due to availability constraints inside the park, we’ll ensure you still enjoy the night drive experience in a private concession near your camp. Day 9 Johannesburg

As we bid farewell to the wild beauty of Kruger National Park, it’s time to embark on our journey to Johannesburg. Along the way, there will be ample opportunities to make exciting stops and explore the wonders of the region. One of the notable highlights will be the breathtaking 3 Rondavels viewpoint, offering awe-inspiring vistas over the scenic Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. This remarkable lookout promises captivating views, with cloud cover usually at a minimum, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

As the day draws to a close, our incredible African safari adventure culminates upon reaching Johannesburg this evening. With cherished memories, newfound friendships, and a wealth of captivating experiences, we bid you farewell, knowing that the magic of Africa will forever remain in your heart.
